Project 1

Dear pupils and teachers!

We are going to present the project Choosing a career.

We have chosen this project because we wanted to find out what careers the pupils of our school are going to choose and what influences their choice. We also wanted to find some information about the qualifications one can get and the admission requirements at the educational establishments of our town.

We have interviewed 100 pupils of our school. We asked them the following questions;

1 What do you want to be? You can see the results on this chart. According to our opinion poll 10% of the pupils want to become programmers.

14% want to work in the financial field

4% want to become a teacher

21% want to become journalists

18% would like  to acquire the profession of an interpreter

15% want to devote their life to the profession of a doctor

18% want to become miners

As you see the most popular profession is the profession of a journalist. One of the most popular professions is the profession of a miner because it is one of the most prestigious in our town.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that 82% of the pupils have chosen the professions which require a university degree.

The second question was: What has influenced your choice?

According to our survey

18% of the students follow in their parents footsteps

19% answered that their parents make them choose this career

15% will follow their parents advice

25% has been dreaming about this career since childhood

23% couldnt answer the question

To conclude Id like to say that a lot of pupils havent made their choice yet and a lot of pupils make their choice by themselves.

And of course our parents play a very important role in the decision making process.

I have visited our Soligorsk College of Chemistry and Mining. Id like to tell you some words about it. Firstly some words about the building. There are two wings .The first wing has Maths, Chemistry, English rooms where these and many other subjects are taught. The other wing is fitted with different devices and the collegians study mining equipment there.

To my mind the building of the college is shabby and is in need of repair and redecoration. The window frames are decrepit. I think the building hasnt been repaired since 1969 the year when it was founded.

And now some words about the education you can get there.

After finishing the 9th form you can apply to the departments of mineral processing .Last year the lowest passing score for this department was 10 points. After finishing this department you can be a trained worker and find a job at one of the concentration plants of the Belaruskali firm.

The lowest passing score for the power supply department was 14 points. You can work  as an electrician and be a worker at electric power stations after finishing this department.

The lowest passing score for the mining department was 10 points. After finishing this department you can work as a miner.

The passing score for the electro mechanics department was 13 points. If you finish this department you can work as an electrician at a concentration plant or in a mine or in some other places.

After finishing the 11th form you can apply to the department of emergency management.

Last year the passing score for this department was 10 points. You will be trained to become a life-saver and a fireman if you enter this department.

Last year 450 people applied to the college but only were enrolled .If you want to enter the college you have to sit for two exams. Youll have to take an exam in Maths and write a dictation either in Russian or Belarusian. You also have to undergo a medical check up. Of course it would be easier for you to enter the college if you have good grades in your certificate of education.

We also visited our college of education. We met one of the teachers of the college and she answered our questions. The college was founded in1990 .The college trains future nursery teachers, teachers of foreign languages, teachers of arts and crafts, teachers of Physical Education, teachers of Music.375 students study at this college. If you want to become a teacher of arts and crafts you can enter the college after finishing the 9th form .Last year the lowest admission score for this department was 11 points, but if you want to become a teacher of English, Music, Physical training you can enter the college after finishing the 11th form. When you apply to the college you have to take two exams. Youll have to sit for either Russian or Belarusian, the second exam depends of the department youve chosen.

If you want to become a nursery teacher youll have to sit for biology. Last year the lowest admission score for this department was 9 points.

If you want to become a teacher of music youll have to sit for an exam in music.

If you want to become a teacher of foreign language youll have to sit for an exam in a foreign language. Last year the lowest admission score for this department was 9 points.

If you want to become a teacher of PE youll have to sit for an exam in PE . Last year the slowest admission score for this department was 13 points.

It is advisable for the applicants to have good grades in their certificate of education because grade point average affects your chances in college admission.

You also have to undergo  a medical check-up.

I have found out some information about vocational school #72. The school was founded in 1982.

If you enter this vocational school you can get qualifications of a miner, electrician, mechanic, repair mechanic, welder, breakdown mechanic, turner, fitter, milling machine operator, monitoring instrument operator, machine operator. After finishing this vocational school you can find a job at one of the concentration plants or mines of the Belaruskali firm.

You are to be healthy and fit to enter this vocational school. You dont have to sit for any exam to be admitted but you are to have good marks in your certificate of education. Last year the passing grade point average was 7.8

To conclude wed like to point out that unfortunately there are no universities in our town, but its nice that we have some colleges where the young people of our town can get some qualifications. We met there friendly and polite people. I would like to add that it was exciting to go there and meet new people, to carry out an opinion poll on our own without grown-ups. Weve learnt how difficult it is to enroll at the colleges and we got some idea about these educational institutions.

Project 2

The Profession of a Teacher

P1 Our project is The profession of a teacher Weve chosen this theme because we wanted to find out what pros and cons the profession of a teacher has, we wanted to learn something new about our teachers how they feel about their job, what they like and dislike about us, students.

Weve interviewed 15 teachers and prepared a dialogue  based on these interviews.

P2  -Come in, please.

P1_Good afternoon.

P2  Good afternoon.

P1  My name is . I am a correspondent of the newspaper Leader Press. I am writing an article about the teachers of our town. Could you answer some questions?

P2 With pleasure.

P1 So to begin with, why have you chosen the profession of a teacher and what advantages does your profession have?

P2 To speak frankly, I have chosen this profession, because I have followed in my relatives footsteps. All the women in my family are teachers: my granny, my mother, my aunt.

- Are they? How interesting?

-Yes. But not only because of that, I like my job, I like to teach my students and communicate with them. They also teach me. What Ive learnt about the young of the 21st century is that they are very special. They like music, computers and the Internet. Most of them are friendly and funny. But of course, I communicate not only with my pupils. I have a lot of friends among my colleagues. They support me in difficult circumstances and we respect each other.

My job helps me to forget my everyday problems and the negative moments in my life and by the way, unlike other working people, teachers always have their vocation in summer. So, I like my job and the people, who are around me.

P1 _ Thats great! And what pupils do you like to work with?

P2 I like to work with all pupils because all of them are interesting personalities. Of course every teacher likes it when the pupils are willing and hard-working, when their eyes shine with enthusiasm when they are persistent to achieve their goal. But nevertheless I love all my pupils, respect them and try to establish good relations with every student.

P1 -I see. There is something else Id like to know. Its common knowledge that every profession has its disadvantages. Could you tell me what disadvantages your profession has?

P2 -You are quite right. There are a lot of disadvantages in our job. It takes a lot of efforts and time. It is nerve-racking and tiresome. I have to make some pupils do what they are reluctant to do. Our job is stressful because of misunderstanding between some pupils and teachers. Thats why a lot of teachers have problems with their health and their voice. At times we have to shout at naughty pupils.

But nevertheless I like my job with its pros and cons. The school is my second home it is a part of my life and my pupils and colleagues are my second family.

P1  I find your words extremely interesting. One more question. What would you advise the students who have chosen the career of a teacher?

P2  A future teacher should love children and his subject, he or she should be patient and understanding. So I advice future teachers to be wise but they should think hard before choosing this career.

P1 Oh! Thank you very much. Youve helped me a lot. By the way I have interviewed 50 teachers I asked them the question Would you like to give up teaching and take up another job? 80 % of the teachers dont want to change their job, as they  got used to it and cant imagine themselves doing something else.20% would change their job if they had an opportunity. Maybe they are tired of noisy pupils and a great amount of work.

We also asked the teachers what features of character can help or prevent them from being successful in their career.

A  teacher should be

a person who is rude

kind

tactless

courageous

hurts other peoples feelings

willing to forgive

makes fun of his pupils

enduring and healthy

is narrow-minded and cant assimilate new ideas

intelligent

doesnt get prepared for his lessons

cultured

lacks self-control

never stop learning

cant be a good teacher

considerate

Love children

So in conclusion we want to mention that the profession of a teacher is very painstaking.

We respect the people who have chosen this profession and we are very grateful to them because they give us their knowledge.

Dear teachers! We wish you health and stamina. Dont take offence with us because sometimes we are not right you know that we love you very much.

Project3

The Profession of a Dentist

Today we are presenting our project the Profession of a Dentist We have chosen this theme because it is one of the most respected professions in the country and we got interested in this job. First of all we would like to tell you a few words about the profession of a dentist. Do you know that dentistry is seen as one of the 10 most trusted and ethical professions.   By the way the patron saint of dentists is Saint Apollonia, martyred in Alexandria by having all her teeth violently extracted.

Dentistry combines science and technology with helping people. What does a dentist do?

Dentists diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and malformations of the teeth and mouth. They improve a patients appearance; help patients feel better about their smiles. They educate patients on how better to care for their teeth. Dentists also teach future dentists and dental hygienists, and they perform scientific research improving oral health and developing new treatment methods. Dentists use laser systems, informatics, new materials and techniques. Dentistry is an appealing career because it is exciting, rewarding, respected and well paid.

Admission requirements in medical institutions of higher education are very strict. You must have a deep knowledge in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Russian or Belarusian language. You must also have sound health, good eyesight, and you mustnt be allergic to different medicines. Youll have to study for 5 years.

We went to the dental center and interviewed 6 dentists. We asked them the following questions

1.      What features of character are required to make a good dentist?

The dentists think that it is necessary to be friendly, polite, sympathetic, sociable and patient. A dentist should be able to set patients at ease, deal with rude and over particular people, to overcome ones own fear.

2.    What difficulties do you face?

The dentists think that when a patient is scared his fear passes on the doctor. It is difficult to work when a patient doesnt trust the doctor.  It could be difficult to make a diagnosis and decide on the treatment because many patients can be allergic to different medicines.

It is difficult to work because of the lack of medicines, materials and tools,a long working day and too many patients. They have to treat 20-30- patients a day.

Its difficult to work with oversensitive patients.

3. What do you like in your job?

They like to communicate with people, see happy smiles when people are relieved from the pain.

4. What patients do you like?

Patients who trust the doctor, understanding patients, patients who come not to treat their teeth but for a check-up, patients who are not afraid, who follow the doctors advice.

5. What advice can you give to a person who wants to become a dentist?

They think that such a person should be patient, and self-possessed,  should try to reach his goal and win his colleagues respect, develop his skills and learn more about new technologies and medicines , he shouldnt be afraid to ask for advice his colleagues.

In conclusion we would like to say that after interviewing the dentists we are not afraid of visiting them any more.
